Autonomous Ships
Mr. Tomoaki Yamada, ClassNK Manager of Research Institute 
Technology for the autonomous operation of ships is attracting attention as it aims to improve safety by preventing human error, improve labor conditions by reducing crew workload, and optimizing navigation. This session will explain the ClassNK guidelines which outline requirements to consider from a safety perspective for the practical use of automated/autonomous operation technologies from the perspective of designs, ship construction, and machinery installations.

Cyber Security

With ISM Code recommending the handling of cyber risks beginning in 2021, the establishment of a Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) is an urgent need for companies and ships. This session will explain CSMS and the cyber security of ship and machinery based on the“ ClassNK Cyber Security Approach”.

The new administration of the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) is focused on improving the customer experience with the Panama Registry, there is a need for a comprehensive modernization of the registry process to move completely to the digital era. The Minister of Maritime Affairs and the General Director of Merchant Marine will address the aspects that make Panama your best flag choice and the modernization plans.

Social Implementation Strategy of NMRI

At NMRI, we work with industry from the beginning of research and take responsibility for the social implementation of results. That is the strategy of us to drive innovation by steadily bridging research and business. We will report on Mitaka Open Innovation Research Park concept, maritime cluster collaborative research, NMRI cloud services, etc., which are underway to realize this strategy.

Initiative on Evaluation of Ship Performance in Actual Seas -OCTARVIA Project-

Aiming to establish the accurate evaluation method for ship performance in actual seas, Japan Maritime Cluster Collaborative Research -OCTARVIA Project- has been launched. In the lecture, analysis method of ship monitoring data, prediction method of ship performance in actual seas and the evaluation method of life cycle fuel consumption are presented.

Development of the Energy-Saving Hull Forms for Coastal Shipping.

Domestic vessels have been said to be difficult to improve the performance drastically because they have more design restrictions than ocean-going ships and the difficulty of hull form optimization is also higher. Under these circumstances, the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers and three shipbuilding
companies have formed a research consortium, and by adding support from the National Maritime Research Institute, high energy-saving hull forms that achieve over 16% of the previous level can be realized.

Emission Reduction Technologies of Greenhouse Gas in Marine Field

From a point of view of environmental protection, it is needed to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas from ships. In order to establish technologies to use various energy source, we have studied mixed combustion technologies using hydrogen and ammonia for marine engines. In this lecture, some emission reduction technologies of greenhouse gas for marine field are presented.

​Proposal for future shipbuilding systems

The environment surrounding the shipbuilding industry in Japan continues to be extremely severe. Establishing a stable management foundation for the shipbuilding industry and strengthening international competitiveness are urgent issues. In this way, while the environment surrounding the shipbuilding industry is changing, we will make proposal for future shipbuilding systems that are necessary to advance drastic reforms in the shipbuilding industry.

 

The shipping industry faces an urgent need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) even after
2020, when stricter regulations on SOx emissions take effect, and LNG could be viable alternative marine
fuel. This seminar will look at the latest international trends in LNG fuelled vessels and LNG bunkering
activities, and some of the critical elements in introducing them in Japan.
The seminar will also explain how effectively LNG fuel can contribute to reduce GHGs emissions.
