The JJA Jewelry Design Award, the top jewelry design contest, is held once every two years. This year, we will hold an award ceremony for the winning entries selected from among many entries from all over Japan.

Come and witness the joyous occasion of the creators with new possibilities who will lead the jewelry industry in the future.

SDG trends in the world and the pearl business (Sustainability of pearls).

In the first part (keynote speech), the sustainability of the pearl industry will be presented from three angles (People, Planet, Pearl) through the life cycle of pearls. The 'People' angle focuses on the thoughts of the people from production to processing/distribution and consumption, and the high level of human skills that cannot be mechanised, while the 'Planet' angle focuses on the satoumi economy, a characteristic of pearl cultivation. “Pearl" introduces the culture created by pearls, the stories and traditions of people connected by pearls, and the richness of their hearts and minds. The presentation will also introduce the recent new initiative 'Upcycling' from the perspective of the SDGs.

 

In the second part, Mr A, an active pearl farmer, and Mr Atsumi, a researcher studying Akoya pearl oysters adapted to climate change, will be invited for a cross-talk session to hear how three generations of pearl farmers are raising pearls and how they are coping with environmental changes that are getting worse year by year. He will also talk about the efforts of a researcher from Mie Prefecture who is continuing research on Akoya oysters adapted to climate change, and the sustainability of pearls from the researcher's point of view.
